Man who arrested Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse honoured

NEW DELHI: The widow of the man who caught Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathram Godse just after he shot the Father of the Indian nation on January30, 1948, in Delhi, has been given a cheque for Rs 5 lakh by the Odisha state government.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik presented the cheque to Mandodari Nayak, the widow of Raghu Nayak, at the state secretariat in Bhubaneswar.

Godse had shot dead Gandhi at Birla House in New Delhi on January 30, 1948. Raghu Nayak was working as a gardener at the Birla House at that time.

He wrestled with the assassin and pinned him down before the police came and took him into custody.

Raghu Nayak died in 1983 and his widow lives with her daughter.

Godse, who was hanged in Ambala Jail on November 19, 1949, had killed Gandhi for causing India’s partition and supporting Muslims.
