BRAMPTON: This past weekend saw a blast of Indian haute couture hit the Greater Toronto area at the Embassy Grand Convention Hall in Brampton.

Jashn Fashion Show 2019 brought top-notch Indian fashion names right here from all over the globe, including Canada, the US, India, Thailand as well as a wizard from Down Under and took the community by storm.

The three-day festival in Toronto, launched with a VIP gala dinner night and dedicated to cancer surviving fashionistas, was replete with a grand buffet of fashion shows hitting the ramp. Many of the participants were cancer survivors from the world of fashion design.

Friday’s fashion night started with a bang and brought Payal Singhal from Mumbai whose signature understated elegance for the modern bride and wearable global fashion made an impression on the audience. Singhal’s fashion sense reflects a deep understanding of modern day women and translates well on to the ramp. Ruffled skirt lehengas with short cropped cholis with floral embellishments displayed the well-toned abs of the millennial.

Australian Indian designer Rajat Tangri brought his prêt and couture lines to the ramp with his fabulously refreshing cocktail collection look book. SVS collections by Sonam and Paras Modi from Mumbai brought a stunning denim Indian block-printed prêt collection with long flowing palazzos teamed with peplum and crop tops and delicately embellished dupattas. The same styles converted effortlessly onto classic floating silk materials for the more discerning woman.

Trendz by Jass, GTA’s very own talent, showed off classic embroidered lehengas and Indian wear for the more traditional appetite. The beauty of this presentation was that it was a Cancer Survivors Ramp Walk. It was flawlessly executed and was received with great applause.

Friday’s design extravaganza also whetted the appetite of the fashion police who turned up in large numbers to scour the ramps for the latest and hottest trends. Kolkatta designer Nupur Kanoi brought a fresh perspective to the GTA with light flowing east-meet-west fusion creations. It was unique as most of her pieces were draped and styled loosely reflecting Indian and western styles blends with batik and traditional flower prints. Delhi designer house of Nazaakat did extremely well with its wearable collection of floral lehengas and sharara pants with delicate embroidery in gold and silver thread. Brampton’s Zari by Sanyam Lugani really wowed the crowd.

On Saturday, the beautiful fairytale princess style lehengas in pastel shades by Brampton’s very own Sattaj Kaur, sprinkled with glitz and glamour was a crowd pleaser. Iconic GTA-based international designer Dinesh Ramsay’s bridal wear collection was the most awaited for fashion show and added the Bollywood touch of class. The ornately decorated lehengas in classic Ramsay style floated by accentuated with high-end leather designer bags hand crafted by Zicha.

Of course, no “jashn” (celebration) would be complete without exhibits and a bazaar. There was plenty to choose from for all kinds of fashion styles and accessories including jewellery on both Saturday and Sunday. Grover and Grover from New York were quite busy taking measurements for bespoke suits for men as was its counterpart, Prarena Grover from Thailand, for women. Sunita Kollections from Brampton displayed their very ornate creations.

The diversity of Indian design was showcased in this weekend of Jashn fashion show celebration – a celebration not only of fashion but also of cancer warriors and survivors.
